Four vehicles were involved in the accident, which happened on North Harbor Drive at West Grape Street around 7:10 p.m. Michael Jay Glantz, 62, of Alpine was critically injured when his blue 2010 Hyundai Elantra was struck from behind. Emergency personnel pulled Glantz from the vehicle and tried to resuscitate him but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials tell NBC 7 two other victims were taken to the UCSD Medical Center. The extent of their injuries is unknown. Witness Steve Thorn described the crash as a “tremendous explosion.” The car propelled itself over the island there and flipped over three or four times, at least, Thorn said. The domino-effect accident happened about a mile and a half from the San Diego International Airport, where Andy Hendry and his wife had just landed. Hendry said they had only been driving their rental car for five minutes when they were rear-ended. Hendry says they were lucky. “We weren’t hurt. The car really didn’t suffer much damage,”he said.

A portion of North Harbor Drive near the airport shut down Sunday night because of a deadly accident. It started around 7 p.m. when a car hit the median and catapulted eight feet into the air, according to witnesses. NBC 7’s Candice Nguyen talked to one couple involved in the crash who are counting their blessings.

The driver ran away on foot while one passenger died at the scene, police said. Another passenger was sent to the hospital with unknown injuries. Word spread quickly in a Rosenberg trailer park, where the suspect lives. I heard there was an accident last night. Thats what I heard. Then this guy said the cops came looking for him, said Stephen Delosantos, a neighbor. Neighbors are speculating. (He was) probably drinking, said Delosantos. Theyre always outside with friends.
