The single-vehicle crash happened around 1:45 p.m. near the 101 Freeway interchange. The California Highway Patrol said the 72-year-old male driver lost control of a black Mercedes Benz station wagon, veered across the lanes and hit the center divider. The vehicle then burst into flames. Officer Don Thompson, a member of the LAPD Bomb Squad, was traveling on the southbound 405 Freeway when he saw the crash. He stopped, jumped over the concrete jersey wall and pulled the driver out of the burning car. Authorities said two civilians also stopped to help. The driver was taken to the hospital to be treated for moderate injuries. Thompson sustained first- and second-degree burns to his hands and leg, along with smoke inhalation and abrasions. The flames were quickly extinguished, but some lanes on the freeway had to be closed for a couple of hours. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. (Copyright 2013 KABC-TV/DT.

Most people on the roads are in a holiday rush and the chances of accident or injury go up significantly during the holiday season. (Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20131224/MN38007 ) Below are some tips to help drivers this holiday season stay safe and avoid any accidents. The Berman Law Group wants everyone to enjoy the holidays and enjoy time with family and friends, and not have to go through the ordeal of an auto accident, whether it be car, truck, or motorcycle. No one wins when there is an auto accident. Drive slower than normal – Everyone is in a rush, so set yourself up for a safe ride by not being in a rush. Take your time and allow plenty of time to get their on time. Focus entirely on the road – Too many people use the roads as a chance to get caught up on phone calls or texts (which is against the law), so give your full attention to the road and you will be much safer this 2013 holiday season. Make sure your car is well equipped – Do you have the right tires on your car? If you live in the colder parts of the country, you might even need chains on your tires. Do you have enough gas to get to your destination? Make sure your tires and your car is properly serviced before you hit the road this holiday season. The holidays are a time to be enjoyed with friends and family. Make sure you get there safely and enjoy the holidays.

Firefighter finds his daughter dying in crash on Christmas Eve
Ellworth Austin said he knew both the volunteer firefighter, Steve Whitcomb, and the daughter, Katie Hamilton. “It’s a terrible tragedy,” said Austin, who, like Whitcomb, runs a plumbing business in Brookline. “It’s Christmas … and everybody is pretty teary-eyed.” The firefighter didn’t recognize his daughter’s body at the time, police chief Bill Quigley told local newspaper The Union Leader . “Her father was the one who pulled her out of the car without knowing it was her,” Quigley said. Hamilton, 30, died of her injuries caused when another vehicle struck hers from behind, pushing it into the opposing lane of traffic, where a third car collided with hers head on, Quigley told WMUR. Hamilton leaves behind not only her father. “I know that she is a young mother,” Quigley said. “It’s a sad, sad day for all of us, not just because it’s Christmas Eve.” In Brookline, almost everyone knows Whitcomb and the tragedy he has suffered.

Police car crashes into lake at Robe
Trucks are involved in a number of these crashes. Rear-end accidents make up about 18 percent of the 400,000 truck crashes that occur each year, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration . Trucks need approximately 40 percent more time than cars to stop because of factors such as weight. They are also less maneuverable and start more slowly. Common causes of rear-end collisions include speeding, driver fatigue, defective brakes, distracted driving, and inclement weather. Regardless of intention, accidents caused by preventable mistakes often result in liability, said Perecman. Negligent parties, which may include the driver and truck company, must compensate injured victims for their medical expenses, lost wages, and other losses arising from the accident.
