More To Car Seat Safety Than Just Strapping Kids In

One dead after speeding car slams into St. Petersburg house

Educational sessions were held in schools and daycare centers. A local fire department offered free booster seats to the first 250 people who attended a meeting where a car-safety video, No Regrets, was shown. None of this was done for the control group in York. Six months after the educational campaign ended, the researchers found a 28 percent increase in booster seat use in the Norristown group, compared with no change in York. And as a bonus, more Norristown adults were found to be using seat belts after the campaign. The study, said Arbogast, proves that the key to reaching the unpersuaded is to enlist messengers respected by their communities. “As parents, we are constantly bombarded with safety information. We want to do the right thing, but it’s hard to tease it all out .

BMW M4 Safety Car Debuts in MotoGP at Qatar Grand Prix

“I do feel very fortunate that all he hit was the corner of the house and the porch,” Brown said. Onlookers speculated about a police pursuit, but a St. Petersburg Police Department spokesman said the crash happened quickly and that Harshbarger had not been pursued. A caller reported seeing the car driving south on 49th Street N at a high speed without headlights. Moments later, the car was in pieces. Harshbarger’s driving record shows he was cited for driving under the influence in 1998. In 1989, his license was suspended for six months for the same violation. In 2008, his record shows, he was part of a crash with property damage. In a separate incident that year, he was cited for driving 55 mph in a 35 mph zone.

Consumer safety groups say NHTSA should have pressured GM to order a recall as early as 2007. The agency’s acting chief, David Friedman, has been called to testify before a House of Representatives panel in April looking into whether NHTSA failed to heed warning signs. A Senate panel is also planning hearings. Feds say reports inconclusive Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx, whose sprawling department oversees NHTSA, has defended the agency, saying data about the ignition switch from was “inconclusive”. “It just didn’t point to an investigation” by NHTSA, he said, describing the broad probe that companies fear. That evidence included two reports completed in 2006 and 2007 by outside investigators hired by NHTSA. The reports zeroed in, as Young had, on the ignition problem. Both were the results of so-called Special Crash Investigations, which the agency initiates when it wants to take a deeper dive into accidents and their underlying causes, to help see if a wider NHTSA investigation is warranted. After the 2006 Wisconsin crash, the Chevy Cobalt driven by Megan Ungar-Kerns, now Megan Phillips, was taken to an impound lot. Former state trooper Young met a NHTSA contractor from Indiana University and shared his findings. “I made them aware,” he said. The team from Indiana University searched NHTSA’s own database in 2006 and found at least six consumer complaints of the ignition switch cutting off the engine.

What to do if you have a car that’s a lemon

Even if the dealer says it cant find the cause of the problem it still counts as an attempt. Ensure all of your concerns are noted on the work order. You can also complain to your state motor vehicle department if you find inconsistencies in the work order. When you suspect you have a lemon, contact the manufacturer through certified mail so it has proof of your complaint before you file a lawsuit. If the dealer tries to trade you into a different car, ask to see the terms and check around to ensure you arent getting another lemon. Notify the FTC if you suspect foul play, as it oversees the manufacturers, dealers and warranties. In some cases, you can double your damages if you can prove the manufacturer violated the lemon law willfully. Hire an attorney. Many state lemon laws pay legal fees to make filing a complaint more affordable. Sometimes all it takes is an attorney letter to resolve [the case] quicker. You can find one through the National Association of Consumer Advocates . Consider using the state-run arbitration offered by the attorney generals office. The Better Business Bureaus dispute resolution program handles the majority of arbitration, but its funded by the manufacturer, Shahan cautions. Above all else: Be persistent, Shahan says.
