EPPD: Man killed in three car crash is California native

EL PASO, TX (KTSM) — A man was killed on US-54 around 1:33 a.m. Thursday morning after the car that he was driving was involved in a three car crash. John Steven Colon, 27, of Heywood, California was pronounced dead after the 2009 Impala that he was driving slammed into the back of a Ford F-350 pickup truck driven by Carlos Valma, 33. Police say that Colon, and a third vehicle, a 2013 Hyundai Sonata, driven by 20-year-old Rogelio Gonzalez were driving northbound on US-54 near Hercules at high rates of speed. Gonzalez was driving in the far left passing lane and Colon was driving in the right lane when he slammed into the back of the Ford F-350. The force of the collision caused both the Ford F-350 and Colon’s Impala to swerve left, crossing three lanes of traffic, eventually smashing into Gonzalez’ Hyundai Sonata. EPPD say that speed is a factor in the crash, but at this time, it is unknown whether alcohol played a factor in the crash. The scene of the crash was over a quarter mile in length and US-54 was closed for 13 hours while police investigated the crash.
