Department of Corrections records show Corchado has served prison time for trafficking cocaine and extortion. Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs called the crash an “absolute tragedy and disaster.” Diaz said a girl died at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, but she didn’t have any more details. One person at the hospital was in critical condition and five others were in serious condition, said spokeswoman Katie Dagenais. In all, 13 people were hospitalized, including the girl who died from her injuries, and two others were treated at the scene, authorities said. Eleven of the injured were children, said John Mulhall, a spokesman for the Orange County Fire Rescue. Several of the injured at the KinderCare building in Winter Park were reported to be in “very, very serious condition,” Diaz said. The day care’s website says the center provides childcare and learning opportunities for children ages 6 weeks to 12 years old and has been in the community for more than 25 years. Gov. Rick Scott released a statement saying, “As a grandfather of three young children, I can’t imagine losing such a precious life at such a young age. Today’s hit-and-run was an act of cowardice, and members of the Florida Highway Patrol are working closely with local law enforcement to bring those who caused this crash to justice.” 2014 CBS Interactive Inc.

Credit: Reuters/Orange County Jail/Handout U.S. ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) – A Florida man suspected of involvement in a hit-and-run car crash that killed a 4-year-old girl and injured 14 people at an Orlando-area day care center surrendered to authorities on Thursday, police said. Robert Corchado, 28, turned himself in at the Orange County Jail, said Cindy Williams, a spokeswoman for the Florida Highway Patrol. Police launched a manhunt for Corchado after the crash on Wednesday. He is charged in an arrest warrant with leaving the scene of a crash involving death and seriously bodily injury, a felony. The warrant sets his initial bond at $100,000. Williams said Corchado was considered a fugitive and could face further charges. Corchado is believed to be the driver of a Dodge Durango SUV that triggered the crash by rear-ending another car as it slowed to turn into the day care entrance near Orlando. The second car, a Toyota Solara, jumped the curb before going through the parking lot and into the front of the KinderCare day care center, striking several children and stopping at the back of the building. Williams identified the 4-year-old girl who died as Lily Quintus of Orlando. The driver of the Durango fled the scene and was later found parked at a home.

A Toyota Solara convertible went out of control after it was struck by a Dodge Durango, jumped a curb and smashed into the day care, breaking through the wall and into the building, said Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Wanda Diaz. The convertible driver was not hurt. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT The Durango left the scene but was located almost two hours later after it had been abandoned at a home. The highway patrol said it is looking for 26-year-old Robert Corchado, who has been arrested eight times since 2000, according to Florida Department of Law Enforcement records. Troopers said he was the driver of the Durango, but wouldn’t say how they established that. Troopers said Corchado may be trying to leave the area, and troopers and deputies headed to Orlando International Airport to look for him.
