A vehicle driven by 36-year-old Michael Ettz of Lodi rear-ended Breslin’s cruiser a short time later, authorities said. The officer suffered a significant head injury and underwent surgery for a skull fracture and bleeding, while Ettz was treated for minor injuries. Canaje was not hurt in the accident. Breslin, a 39-year-old married father of two, was hospitalized in critical condition. Besides his head injuries, authorities say he also may have suffered broken ribs in the crash. After reporting the accident, Canaje removed Ettz from his vehicle and brought him to an area off the roadway. Ettz then fled the scene on foot, authorities said, but he was soon found in the backyard of a local home by Lodi police. Ettz, a mathematics teacher and athletics coach at Lodi High School, was expected to be released from the hospital on Saturday and will then be remanded to Lodi police. Authorities say he will face criminal and motor vehicle charges, and it was not known if he had retained an attorney. Copyright 2014 The Associated Press.

state of Texas Saturday, local media reported. The deadly crash happened early Saturday morning in Pasadena, about 20 km from downtown Houston, local TV ABC13 reported. Police said a black Mazda Miata apparently went too fast around a curve and lost control. It crossed yellow solid lines, drifted into oncoming traffic from the other direction, and slammed into the taxi. Police said two people in the Mazda died along with two passengers in the backseat of the taxi minivan. The taxi driver and two other passenger were airlifted to a hospital with critical injuries, according to the report. Pasadena police spokesman Vance Mitchell told the media that the impact of the collision sounded like an “explosion” to an officer who happened to be near the scene. He said there was no actual fire but described the accident scene as “horrendous.” Authorities have not yet released names or ages of the victims, but they said alcohol is believed to be a factor behind the accident.
